District merged in 2001 at the same time as ten old cities of the island of Montreal, Outremont counts 23 239 (2004) inhabitants for a surface of 3,84 km2 ( the smallest district of Montreal city). Interesting fact: Outremont has about the same number of inhabitants since 1930.
Small history of Outremont
The town of Outremont was created at the end of the XIX century on the initiative of Mr. Beaubien, a federal politician. He uses barns and others farmer buildings in order to reach the minimum number of houses required at the time to have the status of city.
Outremont remained a rather agricultural town during a certain time. The arrival of the Clerks of St.Viateur has changed all that. They decide to separate small peaces of lands in order to make profit out of their vast new bought grounds. The young religious community was invited to teach in Montreal couples years ago by Mgr. Bourget. They saw coming the expansion of Montreal to”suburbs”. They had the presentiment that the adjacent grounds near their new heart quarter would interest soon people of the overcrowd city.
