Informations and facts

The old Catholic cemetery, which occupied Dominion Square was becoming too small. The Fabrique Notre-Dame decided then to settle on the mountain in 1854. The Fabrique Notre-Dame is the oldest institution in Montreal. The land has many mausoleum buildings and functional ones, but it is these ones that attract because of their venerable age.

Installing this cemetery and the Mount Royal Cemetery on the mountain give the idea to the City of Montreal to expropriate some mansions on the Mount Royal to create a park and ensure public access to the mountain for Montrealers . Note that in the nineteenth century there was a cemetery-park mode which influenced the design of most cemeteries of the time.
