For more than a hundred years, city by-laws have limited the height of skyscrapers in Montreal. The original limit was ten storeys and was in force until the 1930s when a new law allowed construction to 33 storeys but mandated setbacks above the tenth floor, which accounts for the shape of the Bell, Aldred and Royal Bank buildings.
The current by-law makes the top of Mount Royal the limit for building height. The 1000 de la Gauchetière building comes within 10 meters of this limit. | |
