In Montreal, there are reasons strange behind the creations of most park ... At the Square Dominion, we were afraid to unearth the remains of victims of epidemics, in Square St. Louis, it was simply made up on land where use to be a municipal water tank. For many others it was a former rock career, left wide open then used as dump (Villeray Park, Laurier, Marquette). Other recurrent case of park origin is a vacant land left after a huge fire…finally bought out by municipality. Some parks are really born from the desire to preserve public green space before housing development does (Parc du Mont-Royal Park, Saint-Hélène Island and Lafontaine Park).
