Il fit ses études en génie au Royal Military College de Kingston en Ontario avant de faire ses premiers plans sous la direction de l’ingénieur en chef de la compagnie du Grand Tronc. Il s'associe avec Alfred Arthur Cox en en 1892 pour créer le bureau d’architectes Cox et Amos.
