With the arrival of elevators at the beginning of the 20th century, apartment buildings offered a new kind of housing to the well off. Early examples were stylish buildings with Art Deco or Tudor decorations, but since that time economic constraints have spawned too many rental apartment buildings in cheap materials and prosaic designs of little or no architectural interest. Fortunately, since 2004 a new wave of condo and apartment-hotel construction is bringing a fresher wave of style to downtown Montreal. | |
